Andrey Berger
ON THE SURFACE
The series of works was created during his work at Residence 9B using experimental collage technique. Formally, the artist connects it with his street practices – for the last year he has been engaged in guerrilla pasting of author's posters on the streets of different cities. Continuing to follow them, he observed that they, like the skeleton of a sunken ship, are gradually covered with life. The poster attracts attention, ads are pasted over it, tagged, torn and painted over, the paper is fluttered by the wind, washed away by rain and snow. An endless stream of destruction and creation is the essence of the modern city. And in the trap set by the artist - a whirlpool. Refusing the status of an untouchable finished author's masterpiece, the work is constantly in the process of becoming and invites anonymous co-creation. Its language is polyphony, random scraps of words, unclear muttering, echoes and screams.

In the presented series, Andrey Berger simulates the process he observes. Installing, as in street practice, a poster as the first layer, he sews into the work layer after layer obsessive repeating patterns, found objects, fields of pure color and tags. Signs break the connection with objects, the surface of the canvas becomes an imaginary decoration, masking reality. Flashes of color, breaks, textured layers and translucent silhouettes are organized on the canvas with the help of volumetric rhythmic lines. This is the author's gesture that seals and fixes the simulated street process before the viewer's gaze, revealing the distance and conventionality of the presented.
