Residence of Ksenia Dranish
In this season of art residences in Gallery 9B, Ksenia Dranish was the only artist who came to Nizhny Novgorod with a clear work plan and focused on the proposed theme of arts and crafts, which was really close to her. She had mature experience working at arts and crafts enterprises as part of collaborations, she studied crafts in her youth. Therefore, initially we were looking for a master of turning to create wooden forms for a series of painted sculptures that she had conceived. As a result, the artist was engaged in painting a series of wooden forms - vases and nesting dolls - stylized as traditional subjects and ornaments within the residency.

The main thing that was interesting to observe during Ksenia's work was that everything she touches is refracted from the angle of her thinking, her bright personality, which is in search of spiritual meanings. Thus, Balakhna lace, which Masha Obukhova, who lived in the residence before her, used, acquired a completely different meaning for Ksenia. She spent several days immersed in drawing this lace on paper on an enlarged scale. It was similar, for example, to Hindu or Shinto ritual practices, and Ksenia told how, through meditative drawing, she connected with the experience of those women who had been engaged in lace-making for centuries.
